What is Trigger Finger Release Surgery?

Trigger finger release is a quick and effective procedure to relieve the tendon catching or locking that causes trigger finger. At Excel Clinic in Dublin, this minimally invasive, 10–15 minute operation is performed under local anaesthetic with no hospital stay. The surgeon releases the tight sheath around the tendon, allowing your finger to move freely and without pain. Most patients return to light activities within 7–10 days and experience lasting relief. Initial virtual consultation is free, with surgery typically available within 2–4 weeks.

What is Trigger Finger?

Overview

Trigger finger (stenosing tenosynovitis) is a common condition in which a finger catches, clicks, or locks when you bend it. It occurs when inflammation narrows the tendon sheath around the flexor tendon, preventing smooth movement. In some cases the finger can become stuck in a bent or straight position. It affects the ring finger and thumb most commonly but can occur in any finger.

  • Repetitive gripping — prolonged use of tools, equipment, or keyboards
  • Health conditions — diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout increase risk significantly
  • Anatomical — some people have naturally tighter tendon sheaths
  • Age & sex — more common in women and in those aged 40–60
  • Previous hand injury or surgery
  • Occupation — farmers, musicians, and industrial workers are at higher risk

Trigger finger typically develops gradually, with symptoms including:

  • Finger stiffness — particularly in the morning
  • Clicking or popping sensation — when bending or straightening the finger
  • Tenderness — a sore lump at the base of the affected finger, in the palm
  • Catching or locking — the finger locks in a bent position and only straightens with a snap
  • Finger stuck in bent position — unable to straighten in severe cases
  • Pain — both at rest and with movement, which may radiate up the hand

Steroid injections and splinting can help in early-stage trigger finger. However, if symptoms have recurred after injection, are severe, or the finger is locked, trigger finger release surgery offers a highly effective and permanent solution. Early treatment prevents long-term joint stiffness.

The Trigger Finger Release Procedure

Dr Shaalan performs trigger finger release surgery using a minimally invasive technique through a small incision at the base of the affected finger in the palm. There is no general anaesthetic and no hospital admission.

1
Local anaesthetic administered
A small injection numbs the finger and hand completely. You remain awake and comfortable throughout.
2
Small incision made
A precise 1–2 cm incision is made at the base of the affected finger in the palm crease.
3
Tendon sheath released
The tight A1 pulley is carefully divided, allowing the tendon to glide freely again without catching.
4
Wound closure
The incision is closed with fine dissolvable sutures and a small dressing applied. No plaster cast.
5
Walk out same day
You leave the clinic within 60 minutes of arrival. No overnight stay required.

I work with power tools all day — my hands are everything. I had  numb fingers and wrist pain during shifts, and it started to affect my grip on equipment.  Excel Clinic saw me quickly, and the whole team was fantastic.  I was back on site within three weeks, and my hand feels stronger than ever.

It depends on the severity and history of your condition. Steroid injections are a reasonable first step for mild cases and work well for many patients. However, they have a notable recurrence rate — especially in diabetic patients or those with multiple affected fingers. Surgery offers a permanent solution with a much lower recurrence rate. If you’ve already had an injection

As with any surgery, there are risks involved, including bleeding, infection, nerve damage, stiffness, and pain at the scar site. However, trigger finger surgery is generally considered safe and effective. Your surgeon will discuss risks with you prior to your operation and obtaining your consent.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild and can be managed with simple pain relief.

Most take 7–10 days off for office work
Manual labour may need 3–4 weeks

Recurrence after surgical release is rare. Unlike steroid injections, which may need to be repeated, surgical release is generally considered a permanent solution. The long-term success rate is high, and the vast majority of patients experience full resolution of locking and pain.
