What is Carpal Tunnel Surgery?

Carpal tunnel surgery is a quick and effective procedure to relieve pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, treating numbness, tingling, and pain caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. At Excel Clinic in Dublin, this minimally invasive, 10–20 minute operation is performed under local anaesthetic with no hospital stay. Most patients return to light activities within 7–10 days and enjoy lasting relief. Initial virtual consultation is free, with surgery typically available within 2–4 weeks.

What is carpal Tunnel syndrome?

Overview

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common hand condition affecting thousands of people across Ireland each year. It occurs when the median nerve, which runs through a narrow passage in your wrist called the carpal tunnel, becomes compressed or irritated.

  • Repetitive hand movements – typing, assembly work, or using vibrating tools
  • Wrist position – prolonged flexing or extension
  • Health conditions – diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or thyroid disorders
  • Pregnancy – due to fluid retention
  • Wrist injuries – fractures or sprains that cause swelling
  • Anatomical factors – some people naturally have smaller carpal tunnels
Carpal tunnel syndrome typically develops gradually, with symptoms including:

  • Pain in hand and wrist – often worse at night
  • Tingling in fingers – particularly the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers
  • Numbness in fingers – may wake you from sleep
  • Weakness – difficulty gripping objects or performing fine motor tasks
  • Dropping things – due to reduced grip strength and sensation
  • Pain that radiates – may extend up the arm to the shoulder

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, early intervention can prevent the condition from worsening and may help you avoid surgery. However, when conservative treatments fail to provide relief, carpal tunnel release surgery offers a highly effective solution.

Had carpal tunnel surgery in my right hand and had a great result, all sensitivity and pins and needles gone. Super friendly and helpful and always at the end of a phone for any questions I had pre and post surgery.

I work with power tools all day — my hands are everything. I had  numb fingers and wrist pain during shifts, and it started to affect my grip on equipment.  Excel Clinic saw me quickly, and the whole team was fantastic.  I was back on site within three weeks, and my hand feels stronger than ever.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Excel Clinic, carpal tunnel surgery costs €2100 all-inclusive. This covers your consultation on the day of procedure, the surgery, all anaesthetic, dissolvable sutures, aftercare guidance, and your 6-week follow-up. There are no hidden fees. If a separate in-person pre-operative assessment is needed after your free virtual consultation, this is charged at €150. Interest-free finance is available subject to eligibility.

HSE waiting times for carpal tunnel surgery vary but typically range from 18 months to over 2 years in many parts of Ireland. At Excel Clinic, surgery is available within 2–4 weeks of your free virtual consultation, with no GP referral required.

Yes, where clinically appropriate. Our one-stop service combines your in-person assessment and surgery in a single visit — particularly useful for patients travelling from Co. Meath, Co. Louth, Kildare, or further afield. This reduces your number of trips, time off work, and overall cost. Suitability is confirmed at your free virtual consultation.

  • The surgical procedure itself takes approximately 10–20 minutes under local anaesthetic. Your total time at the clinic, from arrival to discharge, is around 60 minutes. You walk in and walk out on the same day — no overnight stay is required.

7-10 days: Return to keyboard work and light tasks

10-14 days: Safe to resume driving (after stitch removal)

3-4 weeks: Return to most work duties

6-8 weeks: Full grip strength recovery Note: Stitches used are dissolvable in most cases.

No referral is needed. You can self-refer and book a free virtual consultation with Dr. Wani to discuss your symptoms and suitability for surgery.

Not always. If your symptoms and clinical examination clearly indicate carpal tunnel syndrome, surgery can often proceed without a nerve conduction study. If there is diagnostic uncertainty, your surgeon may recommend an NCS — this would incur an additional fee and would be arranged in advance of surgery.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved, including bleeding, infection, nerve damage, stiffness, and pain at the scar site. However, carpal tunnel surgery is generally considered safe and effective. Your surgeon will discuss risks with you prior to your operation and obtaining your consent.

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild and can be managed with simple pain relief.

Most take 7–10 days off for office work
Manual labour may need 3–4 weeks

Recurrence is rare, especially when the surgery is done correctly. Less than 5% of patients experience recurrence. In some individuals, recovery may be slower due to how the nerve regenerates.
